Former Checkout.com CTO & SumUp Exec, Riaz Bordie Joins Walletconnect as CTO

WalletConnect today announced the appointment of Riaz Bordie as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Bordie brings extensive fintech leadership experience from senior engineering roles at Checkout.com and SumUp, where he scaled global payment infrastructure and directed the company’s engineering efforts.

At WalletConnect, Bordie will drive the technical development behind WalletConnect Pay, an end-to-end payment method that enables businesses to accept crypto and stablecoin payments through the world's most widely adopted wallet network. He will lead the team in integrating WalletConnect Pay seamlessly into existing PSP payment stacks, while enabling merchants to scale and access their funds more efficiently.

"I'm incredibly excited to join the WalletConnect team at a pivotal moment for crypto and stablecoin payments," says Riaz Bordie, CTO at WalletConnect. "WalletConnect Pay represents a transformative step in bringing seamless, secure wallet-native payments to users and merchants worldwide. I look forward to working with this talented team to accelerate adoption, strengthen interoperability, and unlock real-world utility for crypto users everywhere."

Bordie joins several notable Checkout.com alumni at WalletConnect, including CEO Jess Houlgrave, who previously led Checkout.com’s crypto division. Other senior leaders across legal, operations, and people at WalletConnect also previously held leadership roles at Checkout.com

Previously, Bordie served as VP of Engineering at SumUp, where he drove development of merchant-focused payment products and strengthened the platform's technical foundations to support international expansion. Prior to this, he served as CTO and SVP of Engineering at Checkout.com, where he helped scale the company’s global payments infrastructure and merchant core services during a period of rapid growth.

Jess Houlgrave, CEO at WalletConnect, says, “Riaz's experience building payment infrastructure for PSPs, allowing merchants to accept crypto payments, makes him an ideal addition to our team. His deep knowledge of PSPs and the ecosystem will be instrumental as we work to make crypto and stablecoin payments seamless and accessible for providers, merchants, and their customers worldwide."

Bordie's appointment comes as WalletConnect advances its payments roadmap, with a pilot launch with Ingenico planned for the coming months.

In 2025, the WalletConnect Network powered over $400B+ in onchain volume and connected 55.5 million users across 700+ wallets. On the payments side specifically, in 2025 WalletConnect powered more than $3.26B in payment volume and over $296B in stablecoin volume, averaging ~$5.7B weekly.
